Basic Motorcycle Boot Cleaning

When you buy a pair of new motorcycle boots they always look nice. Part of the appeal when you bought your motorcycle boots is that they looked good and felt good. The more you wear your motorcycle boots, the more comfortable they will be. The leather softens and they begin to conform to your foot. The way your motorcycle boot looks will not improve the more you wear them. The more you use them, the dirtier they will get. The streets you ride your motorcycle on are not clean and your boots will not stay clean. This will especially be true in bad weather.

Basic motorcycle boot cleaning includes the following:

FINISHED LEATHER

  • Get a soft cloth and put a few drops of mild detergent on it. Add enough water to make lather. Use the minimal amount of water because you don’t want to get the leather really wet.
  • Gently rub your motorcycle boots to remove any debris, dirt, and grime. Be careful not to rub excess water into the motorcycle boot leather.
  • Wipe off lather with a damp soft cloth. Dry and shine your motorcycle boots with a clean dry soft cloth.

UNFINISHED LEATHER

  • Get a soft damp cloth or a sponge. Get it damp and rub on saddle soap.
  • Rub your motorcycle boots in a circular motion on the motorcycle boots until there is lather. Gently rub until all debris, dirt, and grime are removed. Be careful not to rub excess water into the motorcycle boot leather.
  • Wipe off lather with a damp soft cloth. Allow your motorcycle boots to dry in a ventilated area.
  • Use a commercial leather sealant to treat and seal your motorcycle boots. Avoid getting sealant on any metal that is on your motorcycle boots. It is recommended that you cover buckles.

Using a leather conditioner will reduce the risk of your leather motorcycle boots cracking and splitting. Motorcycle boots with finished leather can be buffed with pantyhose to bring out the leather’s shine. If there is suede on your motorcycle boots, do not use soap. Use a suede brush to clean suede on motorcycle boots.
